Why Choose Bali for a Fitness Retreat?

I’ve been to Bali FIVE times, most recently in May 2025 – to say I love it is an understatement! The appeal is clear: warm weather year-round, fresh healthy food on every corner, and a culture steeped in spirituality. Its no wonder Bali’s yoga, wellness, and fitness retreats are so popular.

If you’re looking to build strength, kickstart a new exercise routine, or combine workouts with a bit of surfing and sunshine, Bali has a fitness retreat for you. It’s not just a tropical backdrop for Instagram photos (although it does this pretty well!). It’s genuinely one of the best places in the world for a fitness holiday. Here’s why:

A built-in wellness culture

Bali’s wellness scene is legendary. After a tough workout, you can balance things out with yoga, massage, or a protein-packed smoothie. The island makes it easy to look after your whole self – not only your physical body.

Affordable luxury

One of the best things about Bali is the incredible value for money. A week-long retreat with accommodation, meals, and daily workouts might cost less than just the program fee in Europe or the US. You get the perks of high-quality training and spa-like living, without the high-end price tag.

Healthy food everywhere

Fuelling your workouts is easy here. Think smoothie bowls loaded with tropical fruit, nourishing salads, and local veggies spiced to perfection. Most cafes cater to health-conscious travellers, so whether you’re after plant-based meals, protein-packed plates, or a post-workout green juice, you’ll find plenty of options.

Year-round sunshine and stunning scenery

Fancy running along the beach at sunrise, hiking through jungle trails, or cooling down with a stretch overlooking rice terraces? Bali makes training feel like an adventure. The weather is warm all year, so you can swap the gym’s fluorescent lights for natural sunshine and fresh air.

If this sounds like a fun way to spend your annual leave or sabbatical, here are my top picks for the best fitness retreats in Bali…

Exploring Indonesia’s Islands: I did a live-aboard boat trip to Komodo Island a few years back and it was incredible. The views along the way were stunning, I got to sleep on the deck under the stars, and even swam in an insanely picturesque volcanic crater lake (an extinct one of course!). If you get the chance, I highly recommend exploring the less touristy islands beyond Bali like Lombok, Sumbawa, Komodo, and Flores.

Where To Stay in Bali for Fitness Retreats

When you’re picking a workout retreat in Bali, the where is just as important as the what. Different parts of the island have their own vibe, so it helps to know what you’re signing up for before booking.

Here are some of the top spots for fitness retreats:

Canggu – the fitness hub

Canggu has become the beating heart of Bali’s fitness scene. It’s packed with CrossFit boxes, boutique gyms, surf schools, and smoothie cafés on almost every corner.

Retreats here usually blend strength training with yoga, surfing, and recovery sessions. The community is social and international, so if you want to meet like-minded people who care about health, fitness, and maybe the occasional sunset cocktail, Canggu is the place.

Ubud – spiritual wellness

If Canggu is all about energy, Ubud is about balance. Surrounded by lush jungle and rice terraces, it’s the go-to spot for retreats that mix fitness with mindfulness. Think yoga flows, meditation, detox programs, and jungle hikes.

Ubud attracts a more spiritual crowd, so if you want your workouts paired with breathwork, plant-based meals, and spa treatments, this is your match.

Uluwatu – surf & sweat

Perched on Bali’s dramatic cliffs, Uluwatu has a raw, adventurous feel. It’s big on surf fitness, calisthenics, and outdoor training, with a slower pace compared to Canggu.

Retreats here often include sunrise yoga on the cliffs, surf lessons, and functional training circuits overlooking the ocean. If you love mixing fitness with the thrill of the waves, Uluwatu won’t disappoint.

Seminyak – luxury

Seminyak is where you go for luxury fitness and wellness. Here you’ll find retreats that balance gym sessions and functional fitness with beach runs, luxury spa treatments, and lots of downtime by the sea.

Seminyak is stylish and upscale so it’s ideal if you want your retreat to feel like a holiday with plenty of pampering on the side.

Practical Tips for Planning Your Bali Fitness Retreat

I’ve been going to Bali for the last 15+ years and learned a few travel tips along the way. Here are some practical things to keep in mind:

Best time to go

The best time of year for fitness retreats in Bali is the dry season, from April to October. You’ll get warm, sunny days that are perfect for outdoor workouts, surfing, and exploring without the heavy rains.

The wet season (November to March) is still warm, but expect daily downpours that can dampen plans if you’re training outside. Check out these Autumn retreats if you want alternative ideas for November and December.

What to pack

Bring plenty of activewear – quick-dry materials are best in Bali’s humidity. Plus swimwear for beach and pool sessions, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, and a light rain jacket if you’re traveling outside the dry season. A pair of trainers and flip flops will cover most activities.

Travel logistics

  • Visas: Most travellers can get a 30-day visa on arrival which costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah (around $35/£23).
  • Insurance: Make sure you have travel insurance that covers fitness activities (like surfing or hiking), not just medical emergencies.
  • Airport transfers: Many retreats include transfers in their package, but if not, book a reliable driver in advance for a smoother arrival. I used Booking.com to sort an airport pickup when I visited last May and the experience was seamless.

Final Thoughts

Bali isn’t just about beaches and sunsets – it’s one of the best places in the world to combine travel with training. Whether you’re into CrossFit in Canggu, jungle yoga in Ubud, surf-fitness in Uluwatu, or a blend of gym and spa by the beach, there’s a fitness retreat here to match your goals and vibe.

Add in year-round sunshine, nourishing food, and a culture of wellness, and it’s easy to see why so many people come to Bali for a reset. But please don’t miss out on the other experiences it has to offer!

Bali is a truly unique island and one of my favourite places in the world. Beyond the amazing retreat centres and wellness hotels, there are temples, rice terraces, waterfalls, spas, and epic beaches. The people, food, art, and cultural traditions make it well worth exploring before and after your retreat.
